About Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple is a sacred Hindu temple perched dramatically on a 70-meter-high cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean.
It was originally built in the 11th century and later expanded by the revered priest Nirartha in the 16th century. The temple is dedicated to the spirits of the sea and is also known as a powerful spiritual site. Many visitors come not only for the views but also to absorb its unique energy.

What is the Kecak Dance?

This traditional Balinese performance features characters such as Prince Rama, his wife Sita, his brother Lakshmana, the villain Ravana, the white monkey god Hanuman, and the monkey king Sugriva.

The story begins when Prince Rama becomes lost in the forest. The evil Ravana kidnaps Sita and holds her captive in his palace. Rama seeks help from Sugriva, who appoints Hanuman to locate Sita. Hanuman finds her, but is captured and almost sacrificed—yet narrowly escapes unharmed. A great battle ensues, ending in Ravana’s defeat and the burning of his palace.

Important Notes:
• As the Kecak Dance is held at a temple, women on their menstrual cycle are not permitted to enter or watch the performance.
• Entrance to Uluwatu Temple requires a fee of 50,000 IDR.
• Tickets for the Kecak Dance can be purchased online. Please make sure to buy them in advance.
• If you are concerned about your cycle or other issues, tickets might be available on-site, but please note that the performance is extremely popular, and same-day tickets are not guaranteed.
• The performance goes on rain or shine, but since it’s held on a cliffside by the ocean, it can get quite windy and rainy. We recommend bringing a lightweight poncho (even one from a 1dollar shop will do).
